TIRMIS !!!! SOUDAAAANI WA LUBLUB !!!"

TIRMIS!!!!!!! SOUDAΑΑΑNI WA LUBLUB!!!

English Version

During those memorable days when Greeks, lived and thrived in Egypt, it was a common sight in all small towns and even in some neighborhoods of bigger cities to see small baskets tied with ropes or colourful pieces of rags swinging from balconies.

What were those weird little baskets which suddenly «plunged» from high-up may the younger generation ask! It was a very simple way for housewives to do their daily shopping effortlessly from the peddlers which passed regularly under their houses without being obliged to go up and down the staircase from the first, the second and sometimes fifth floors. There were very few elevatos in apartment buildings during the 50s and 60s and it was practical to throw out a small «zembil» with some piasters inside and pull-up a kilo of potatoes, some tomatoes, some “bassal” or even fruit, from mangoes to grapes!

Suddenly you could hear the shrill voice of a a street-hawker puffing his wares and a little basket would come tumbling out of a window or a balcony… The discussion between the buyer and the seller sometimes upset the siesta of older people who would come out grumbling, but for us children it was an interesting spectacle… This little basket so useful for the elder was also a toy for us children. We used to put inside clothes or our old toys and be happy to throw it out to the poor little egyptian boys who looked up with their jet-black shiny eyes, not making the slightest sound and waiting… They had a dignity those little creatures that only now, after so many years may I understand.

A very intense recollection was the shrill voice of various peddlers which broke the absolute silence during the afternoons,  as not many were the cars or noisy transport means in those happy times… I particularly remember a peddlar dragging his old wooden cart and screaming at the top of his voice for everybody to hear: «TIRMIS!!!!SOUDAAAANI WA LUBLUB !!!” We loved those TIRMIS and we therefore hastily lowered our small zembil with some piastres and in return he would put a little twist of paper with fresh cool tirmis as he always had broken ice in a sack with which he covered a whole mountain of  them on his cart!

Thus simple and beautiful was our life in Egypt my friends … We did not want much to be happy then!
