أود أن أقول أن تلك الذكريات تعبر عن صورة حية  تم طباعتها بأحرف بارزة في ذهني مع العديد من الرسوم الملونة النابضة بالحيوية  من ذكرياتي في  مصر.

أتذكر أول مرة رأيته عندما اصطحبنا والدنا للنزهة, صف من «العربات» التي يجرها واحد أو اثنين من الخيول كانوا ينتظرون الزبائن على الطريق الرئيسي خارج الكنيسة اليونانية، صادف أن يكون محمود هو الأول , لقد أعجبت جداً بعربته وما كانت علية ,كانت نظيفة و براقة  ,الشمس سقطت على الحلي  البرونزية العديدة التي كانت بها فانعكست منها أشعة سحرية  , أخي قد تم من العمر ثلاث سنوات، و للتو حدق بعينيه في ذهول , تبين لنا الفوانيس من البرونز على كل جانب من جانبي العربة ,اثنان من الفوانيس ، واحد على اليمين والآخر على اليسار ، مصنوعة من البرونز والزجاج يتم أضاءتها مع حلول موعد الغسق.

نحن الأطفال اعتدنا أن ننظر إلى أسفل مترقبين  ضوء الفانوسين يأتي نحونا كأنها ترقص مع تمايل خطى الحصان الراكض  .

 أحب محمود عمله (العربة) ولكن الأهم من ذلك كله كان (علي) حصانه الذي كان يتحدث معه بهدوء ومحبة , محمود  يمسك بسوط  طويل إلا أنة لم يسبق له أن أستخدمه على علي .

 بدأ للتو السير بالعربة  مع صوت هسهسه مثل  sssssssssss، وضرب الطريق أسفله بقوه بكرباجه  الذي افزع المارة.

كانت المقاعد من الجلد الأسود المبطن ، كانت متردية قليلا هنا وهناك ألا أنها  يمكن أن تجلس 5 أشخاص بشكل مريح جدا حيث  كان هناك مقعد طويل في الجزء الخلفي من السائق أيضا.

في اليمين واليسار من المقعد الرئيسي علقت قطعتين من الجلد طويلة  ومنسوجة في جديلة  حيث أنها تساعد الأشخاص الذين يجلسون في الجزء الخلفي على إحكام قبضتهم.

 هذا المحترف الرائع الذي يعرف كيف يلفت انتباه زبائنه القادمين و يتوقع كل شيء من أجل راحتهم

ولكن بالنسبة  لنا نحن الأطفال أشياء أخرى سرقت  أعيننا مثل الخرز الملون من جميع الأحجام ولكن الأكثر كان صف من العيون البرونزية الكبيرة مع حبة زرقاء في المنتصف ( للعين الحاسدة ) كانت في الجزء الأمامي من العربة  فضلا عن العديد من الأجراس الصغيرة حول عنق علي الذي يقدم لنا لحن عذب مع كل خطوه.

محمود مع السنوات أصبح يعمل لدينا عربجي  يأخذنا إلى الكنيسة كل يوم أحد  و بعد القداس يتوقف عند  جيانولا أفضل متجر للحلويات في  بورسعيد  و نطلب  mille-feuilles والحلويات الأخرى التي لا تنسى.

محمود وعلي غالباً ما يجولان بخاطري بصفة يومية عندما أسمع فرس يعدو  أو أرى  حنطور «hantour» لكنهما  دائماً ما يطاردا أحلامي بلطف لاستعادة ذكريات طفولتي في مصر.

 

Memories from our ARABAGI Mahmoud

 

A distant memory is also our arabagi Mahmoud.  A vivid image, I would say, that is printed in bold letters in my mind with many  colorful illustrations of my memories from Egypt.

 

I remember the first time I saw him when our father took us for a ride. A row of «arabias» drawn by one or two horses were waiting for customers on the main road outside the Greek church and Mahmoud happened to be the first. I was very impressed of how clean and shiny his «arabia» was!  The sun fell on the numerous bronze objects which sparkled sending out magic rays and  and my brother then three years old, just opened his eyes wide in amazement  showing us the lanters of bronze on each side of the arabia.

 

These two lanterns, one on the right and one on the left of Mahmoud’s arabia, made of bronze and glass were lit as soon as dusk fell and we children used to look down the road in expectation of the two little fires coming towards us  dancing at the pace of his galloping horse…

 

Aly his horse was of  a dirty gray  but the mane and tail were all shiny black. Long legs, a little scratched and two ears which turned to the slightest call of its master … Its bridle was a piece of art and was made to order by a craftsman from Cairo. Mahmoud loved his work, his arabia but most of all Aly his horse to which he spoke calmly and lovingly. He clutched a long whip which he never used on Aly. He just started the arabia with a hissing sound like sssssssssss, and lashed at the road with his whip frightening the passers-by.

 

The seats were of black quilted leather, a little worn here and there and could sit 5 people very comfortably because there was a long bench at the back of the driver as well.  At the right and left of the main seat  hung two long leather strips woven in a braid so that the persons sitting at the back would get a firm grip.This wonderful professional who knew how to draw the attention of his future clients had foreseeen everything for their comfort  but to us children other things caught our eye such as the colorful beads of all sizes but mainly a row of big bronze eyes with a blue bead in the middle for the «bad eye,»at the front of the carriage as well as the numerous little bells around Aly’s neck which gave out a sweet melody at every gallop.

 

Mahmoud who with the years had become OUR arabagi took us to church every Sunday and after mass stopped at GIANOLA the best pastry shop of Port-Said, where we ordered mille-feuilles and other unforgetable sweets.

 

Both Mahmoud and Aly often come to disturb my daily life when I hear the gallop of a horse or see a «hantour»  however these two will always haunt my dreams pleasantly bringing back memories of my childhood in Egypt
